Women’s Gate, Wheeling, WV Water Color 11″ x 14″ matted Plein Air – 2016

In 1877, Mr. Thoner built a Victorian Italianate structure as a business and home in center Wheeling, WV.

Mr. Thoner’s business concern was that of fine wines and liquors. His clientele were men of notable influence in the community. Although men were welcome to “taste” and purchase the product via the front entrance, ladies were required to use a side door and enter a separate room.

This gate, which opens to the alley where the side door was located, was added later.

I loved the interplay of the wrought iron gate and its shadow on the sidewalk, as the sunlight streamed down the alley.

Also available as a Gíclee Print (11″ x 14″) limited – numbered editions, and in Note card sets.

The Original is still available as well as Giclee prints (11″ x 14″ matted) as limited – numbered editions, and in Note card sets (5 cards with envelops).
